Hey there, I'm Ben Thiry & I'm the guy here behind Seven Wards Guitars. I've been a guitar player & songwriter for close to 20 years, which is really what led me down the road of luthiery. Years and years ago, my mom gifted me an old Kay archtop from a flea market that was near impossible to play, but looked really nice hanging from the wall in my bedroom at the time. Fast forward to a few years ago, I decided I wanted to return that guitar to its former glory. By researching its issues online, I knew it needed a neck reset -- not the easiest place to start when beginning to work on guitars -- but I was determined to dive in regardless. I got through it having learned many a lesson & discovering a fascination with the inner workings of an acoustic guitar, even though that first one didn't turn out too great (I'll revisit it some day!). Since then, I've rarely gone more than a day without working on one of the many guitars that have passed over my bench. One of the great aspects of luthiery is getting to touch & work with cool guitars, but getting to constantly learn & improve my craft is without a doubt what keeps me engaged.
As a luthier, my philosophy is that every instrument has value and the potential to be a high-quality partner in making music. There are no rights or wrongs when it comes to bonding with a guitar, and I get excited about approaching each guitar in a unique way to make sure it feels like home every time you wrap your hand around its neck. Whether it's an old Stella you found in the trash or a vintage Martin worth thousands, the only thing that matters in the end is that you feel inspired while playing it. I am so appreciative of those that have entrusted me with their guitars, and I can't wait to work on yours.
My one-man shop is based out of my home in Saint Paul, MN where I live with my wife (Chanel), dog (Hank), and cat (Joplin).
